For RTS: Company of HeroesFor FPS: Half-Life 2For RPGs: Star Wars KOTOR What are yours? What's your favorite SP campaign?
RTS: Command and Conquer: Red Alert. Fighting for Stalin or the Allies was just plain fun, and the FMVs and acting were corny, but just good enough to make them really entertaining. And, as in usual C%26C fashion, missions actually had diversity and objectives to accomplish as opposed to the ''kill everyhting on the map'' method found in just about every RTS.
FPS: Deus Ex.. While its technically an FPS-RPG hybrid, its still an amazing shooter with possibly the best storyline. Plague sweeping the world, shadow governemnts, nanotechnology...it all seemed eerily possible.
RPG: Star Wars, Knights of the Old Republic. Placing your character in a time thousands of years before the events of the movies gave the developers a lot of room to be creative with. And they did an amazing job with the room they were given, and created an awesome game with memorable characters, cool locales, and a great gameplay.
Sim: Independence War 2. I love this game because of its memorable characters and compelling story told through good voice acting and beautifully rendered videos. Playing a space pirate with a revelutionary cause behind him is a lot of fun too. What's your favorite SP campaign?
Rise of Nations - Conquer the World... the campaign can be played over and over, each time you play it's different
FPS: to me its a tie between FEAR and half life 2. FEAR did a great job immersing you in a very creepy, ominous environmet. Which made the story so much more cool. Half life 2 on the other hand tells its story through its characters, which is one of its trademarks. the sequence where you have to evade the combine on the rooftops of city 17 would not have been half as good without the NPC%26#39;s and their excellent dialouge. if FEAR and half life were to merge, it would be the greatest game ever.RPG: Star wars KOTOR: easily one of the greatest RPG%26#39;s of our time. Again the story telling is impecable, and the fact you can choose which side you wish to fight for makes it all the more worth while.
for fps - definitely system shock 2, the last few hours are a real drag, but besides that everything is perfectly paced... it%26#39;s also my all time favourite gamerts - it%26#39;s just got to be red alert - c%26c always has the best campaigns and i always found alternate history a lot of fun, and red alert was quite creative with mission structure (even compared with modern rts campaigns)rpg - easily vampire the masquerade: bloodlines, i%26#39;m not a huge rpg fan because i don%26#39;t really enjoy the way rpgs usually end up with some epic quest to save the world from some ancient evil, blah blah blah - bloodlines doesn%26#39;t get very epic, and there%26#39;s some nice intrigue and a lot of very fleshed out characters with stellar voice acting
RTS: Company of HeroesFPS: Half-Life 2RPG: Morrowind
RTS: Homeworld - Many RTS games are known for its lack of storyline depth as they are made almost solely for online play, but this game.. man. This game impressed me in every way possible and its storyline, despite not being revolutionary, was brilliantly told throughout the game%26#39;s events. I think anyone who played it will never forget the Mothership clearing the scaffold, the Raider attack (with that kind of oriental-sounding background song playing, great), the sense of loss and despair that overwhelms us when we return to Kharak only to find out that most of it was completely destroyed, and that vengeful impulse that boils inside you as you direct your anger to the remaining enemy ships... and all of this complemented by the beautiful, dream-like soundtrack.. what a great game. FPS: Deus Ex - I also have to go with Deus Ex. It has the perfect atmosphere, it has style, offers you different choices on how to confront with the situation at hand and it%26#39;s even got its own sense of humor! I still ask myself how they managed to make this game based on the Unreal engine, it%26#39;s almost unbelievable. RPG: Ultima VII - For me this game has not only a great storyline, but is also a lesson for any company on how to make an appealing game without having the greatest graphics engine ever made (Bethesda, you know who you are :P). For many the pinnacle of the Ultima series, Ultima VII was a game way ahead of its time. The wonderful storyline based around the central figure of the series, the Avatar, immersed you in a living world, where everyone had its own agenda (having to eat, sleep, work, go to church.. and all of this done over a decade ago, imagine that), where you had the freedom to interact with pretty much every object, or just to steal them (though you%26#39;d have to deal with the moral implications of such an act, unlike most games), to talk about different subjects with a wide variety of NPC%26#39;s, not to mention the intricate relationships between the Avatar and his companions, all done with great detail. Oh, how I miss Smith, the talking horse. :DIf only Garriott would still have the rights to the Ultima license.. damn you EA! I hate it when big names in the industry hold on to good licenses without ever having the desire to make any games out of it! (the same with Microsoft and the Mechwarrior brand, sigh)
