PC Space Games

Lately I've been asked by a lot of my friends about good space games for the PC. This all started when I refound the old space game Escape Velocity Nova, and then a lot of people who I know went and joined into EVE Online.

As a result, I thought about all of the space games that have come out for the PC, and after searching through GameSpot, I realized that they don't really have a genre section for Space Games.

Now, I am not as knowledgeable in PC games as I should be, and I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who are looking for some good Space Games. I was wondering if we could compile a list of some good Space Games, and if GameSpot has reviewed them, get the scores. And, if they are an MMO, get the prices as well, if they do cost.

I'll start us off, and if I can, edit the main post here with the rest of the list. :)

Escape Velocity Nova

Escape Velocity Nova is a fun 2D space game made by Ambrosia, which is popular for making games for the Mac. With a very wide variety of ships, hundreds of weapons, and multiple story lines to play through, this game provides players with a lot of hours of gameplay. It can get repetitive with the similar missions for money earning, but with new storylines come new missions, which continue to make the game different. This game is a shareware game, and can be played without paying for it, but for the price of $30, you can access 100% of the game.

EVE Online

EVE Online is an online space game with a couple of new expansions that have been released since the original. The graphics of this game are stunning, but the gameplay itself is slightly lacking. The newer games have come up with some better features to keep the game more interesting, and you can download the game for free for a 14 day trial from their website. Since it is an MMO, it costs $30 for a 50 day game card, but if rumor is correct, they allow you to use your in-game money to purchase additional time cards. It is a growing game for young internet space travelers.

X3: Reunion

X3: Reunion is another space sim, which is actually a part of a series. This is the third expansion/game in the series, and they have only gotten better as the years have gone on. Unfortunately, this game also contains a slow pace, but amazing visuals. The universe in the game is extremely expansive. This game, though, is more centered around traveling and trading than it is around combat, although combat is important if you want to stay alive. As of looking at prices, it seems like you can buy this game for $10, but I don't know if this is an expansion and requires the games before it.

Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos

Independence War 2 is another one of those games that has some excellent graphics, but unlike a lot of other space sims, this game boasts an excellent interface and storyline. This game is also not exactly the easiest to get the hang of right away, so patience is a must. The good thing about this game is how open ended this game is. You can choose, if you wish, to become a pirate, and plunder and pillage other ships to make your profits. This game also boasts a nice variety of ships to choose from as well. This game also has a unique first person view from in-ship which looks very good for combat situations.

Darkstar One

Darkstar One is a little more open ended space sim, with assignments that truly allow you to choose what kind of space faring person you want to be. You can choose to be bounty hunter, pirate, or just a usual citizen who obeys the laws. The learning curve of this game is easy, with a simple economic system, and an easy money making system so that you can upgrade and get yourself going in the game quickly and easily. The only downfalls are the controls, which are a bit oversensative, and the fact that you can't abandon a mission, even if you can't finish it. This game can be found for $30 at most game carrying locations.PC Space Games
X3: Reunion (got a bad rating due to bugs which have been fixed)
Descent: Freespace and Freespace 2

I really enjoyed Starlancer.

The reviews weren't too good, but I really enjoyed it.
Freespace 2 - Doesn´t get any better than that
-X3: Reunion
This game is absolutely huge, although it is more of a trade simulation than a full-on combat game (although you can play as a pirate).  Think of it like the Oblivion of space simulators; huge universe, open-ended gameplay, different factions, etc.  And there are dozens of ships to fly, from lowly frieghters to huge battleships.-Independence War 2
This is one of my favorites.  It has open-ended gameplay where you play as a space pirate, damaging or blowng up tansports to steal cargo while taking on their fighter escorts.  There is also a great story to the game, with cool characters, and a decent variety of ships.  Looks extremely good for a game as old as it is.  My only problem is that it is really difficult-Darkstar One
A lot like Freelancer, but better.  You play a spaceship pilot, and there is a campaign to follow but you can also trade.  Fairly arcade-like in that a little kid could play it with ease, but its a ton of fun, and upgrading your ship through out the game is a lot of fun.

What about Parkan 2?It sounds awesome, is there an english version available? I searched a while back and didn%26#39;t find one. Anyone played any version of the game or know if it will be released in the US?Someone described this game as galactic Grand Theft Auto. Having that type of gameplay freedom in a space game sounds like it could be epic, and ALOT of fun!!!video
Unfortunately, I%26#39;ve not heard of that game, and, like you said, it doesn%26#39;t look like there is an English version. :(

Galactic Civ.2:Dread Lords was one of the best (turn-based)games I%26#39;ve played in years. Also, The Homeworld series.
Space ranger 2 is kinda like EV Nova but turn based, I played it for awhile but shelfed it due to exams, prob give it another go soon.
